Cervantes' Birthplace Museum, Alcalá de Henares
Besides its famed university, the small city of Alcalá de Henares, near Madrid region, is
known for being the birthplace of
Miguel de Cervantes
, the author of
Don Quixote
. The Cer-
vantes' Birthplace Museum is located in the house where most scholars believe the writer
was born, and its interior looks much the same as it would have in the 16
th
century.
The intent of the museum is to give visitors an idea of how life was at the time of Cervantes'
birth. The first floor hosts a labor room, a kitchen, a dining room and a surgeon's office (the
profession of Cervantes's father). The upper floor hosts several halls, bedrooms, and a col-
lection of books, furniture, ceramics and pictures from the era.
