47. Cathedral of León, Leon
Built through the 12th to 15th Centuries, the Cathedral of León
is an important example of
Gothic architecture
.
With a French
influence,it'srelatedtootherimportantcathedrals,likethoseof
Notre Dame
,
Saint Denis
and
Reims
.
Lined with 125 stained glass windows and featuring an import-
ant collection of gothic of art, this building is even more im-
pressive when seen from the inside. Called “The House Of The
Light,” it's best to visit on a sunny day, when the sun is stream-
ing in.
The Cathedral also hosts a museum with an important collection of sacred art, featuring
around 1,500 pieces, including 50
Romanesque
sculptures of the Virgin, from different cen-
turies, works by artists like
Juan de Juni
and
Gregorio Fernández
,
a Mozarabic bible and
several codices.
Not to be missed elements include the altarpiece by
Nicolás Francés
and the cloister, with
its sculpted details in the capitals, friezes and ledges.
