47. Cathedral of León, Leon
Built through the 12th to 15th Centuries, the Cathedral of León
is an important example of Gothic architecture . With a French
influence,it'srelatedtootherimportantcathedrals,likethoseof
Notre Dame , Saint Denis and Reims .
Lined with 125 stained glass windows and featuring an import-
ant collection of gothic of art, this building is even more im-
pressive when seen from the inside. Called “The House Of The
Light,” it's best to visit on a sunny day, when the sun is stream-
ing in.
The Cathedral also hosts a museum with an important collection of sacred art, featuring
around 1,500 pieces, including 50 Romanesque sculptures of the Virgin, from different cen-
turies, works by artists like Juan de Juni and Gregorio Fernández , a Mozarabic bible and
several codices.
Not to be missed elements include the altarpiece by Nicolás Francés and the cloister, with
its sculpted details in the capitals, friezes and ledges.

When It's Free
Entrance to the chapel is free every day. To visit the museum, tickets must be purchased.
