46. Tower of Hercules, La Coruña
Located at La Coruña (Galicia), the Tower of Hercules is an
exceptional monument. Built in the 1st Century, even today it
serves its original purpose as a lighthouse. It's one of the few
Roman constructions of this kind in existence, and the only
one in working order. While it's believed that in the Middle
Ages it served as a fortification, throughout most of its history

180feet high, its original form, it was covered, restored, and
modernized in the 18th Century. Although the restoration gave
a neoclassical style to the building, it retains much of its Ro-
man essence.
Visitors can climb to the top and enjoy spectacular views of all
the surrounding coast and the city of La Coruña. Don't' miss the nearby archeological sites,
as well as a sculpture collection.
