Clarence Gagnon undertook the first set of coloured illustrations for
the novel in 1933, producing sixty works in a mixture of chalk, gouache,
pastel, and graphite. 6
For the initial scene, L'église de Péribonka (figure 6.2), Gagnon adopts
a relatively distant vantage point in order to achieve a panoramic and
picturesque composition, rather simplified by reduction to the hori-
