In-Depth Information
Figure 1.7. Urban long-tailed macaques sometimes congregate along roadsides and
cross streets.
Jones-Engel et al ., 2004 ; Schillaci et al ., 2005 ; Schillaci et al ., 2006 ), with long-
tailed macaques often representing the most common type of primate found in
the animal trade and pet markets (Malone et al ., 2003 ). Pet macaques are caged
and chained, and sometimes developed into performing monkeys to bring their
owners revenue. However, after they begin to sexually mature they are not good
pets, and most of them end up with nowhere to go, leaving wildlife and rescue
centers in Southeast Asia to deal with these surplus animals. For example, during
2004 in Indonesia, numerous long-tailed macaques were contained in the ani-
mal rescues centers across the country (Smits, personal communication). These
macaques had been confiscated by wildlife authorities or given up by pet owners.
Because there are few specialized facilities to contain them or standard release
programs, facilities are filling up because there are just too many of them.
Agricultural areas and crop-raiding
Macaques are commonly found around agricultural lands and crop-raiding
can occur in these zones. Although not much research has been done directly
on M. fascicularis as a crop raider in their natural range, there have been
several reports of raiding in Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, and the Nicobar Islands
