conservation of the highly threatened biodiversity in the region, with a major
focus on primate conservation in Madagascar.
Primate breeding companies for biomedical research are generally regarded
by conservation primatologists as “the big bad wolf.” Bioculture (Mauritius)
Ltd has shown that this need not be the case. An ethical and responsible com-
pany can operate in a sustainable way by utilizing a primate resource in a
balanced manner and also direct part of its profit to the conservation of other
threatened species of primates. The primate breeding industry and primate
conservation need not be mutually exclusive.
