morally obligated to put back some of the profits derived from this resource into
conservation. BCM funds and manages five conservation projects in the region,
namely two forest restoration programs in Mauritius, one re-wilding project
on the nearby island of Rodrigues and two forest conservation programs in
Madagascar through its own Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). To date,
BCM employs more than 80 persons directly in these conservation projects.
Mauritius project
BCM owns two blocks of native forests each of approximately 100 acres. One,
a moist tropical hardwood forest in the south east of the island and the other,
a dry tropical hardwood forest dominated by Mauritian Ebony located in the
south west. These blocks of forest, found outside the range of the National
Park, are not represented in the Government Conservation Management Areas
