Laad Industrial and Community Education College who were bitten by long-
tailed macaques living at Khao Wang expressed a positive attitude to the popu-
lation control (Cablephet, 2009 ). Monkey-food vendors at Wat Khao Chong
Krachok had inconsistent opinions regarding population control. Nonetheless,
it seems that Thai people can accept contraceptive methods of population con-
trol, whilst in Nepal, the local residents perceived contraceptive methods of
population control as unacceptable due to their religious beliefs, whilst trans-
location was generally accepted (Chalise and Johnson, 2005 ).
Conflict and commensalism between long-tailed
macaques and humans
In many locations, the local people or local organizations hold a feeding party
for monkeys once a year, each with different names, such as a Monkey Buffet
at Sarn Pra Karn, Lopburi in November ( Figure 5.9 a); a Boon Pa Khaow Ling
(Boon Pa Khaow Ling = bringing food for monkeys, northeastern Thai dialect)
at Kosumphi Forest Park, Maha Sarakham Province (16° 15' 13” N, 103° 04'
18” E) in April ( Figure 5.9 b); a Monkey Palaeng (Palaeng = party, northeastern
Thai dialect) at Don Chao Poo Forest Park, Umnajjaroen Province (15° 36' 36”
N, 104° 50' 53” E) in April; a Monkey Buffet at Muangling Ban Whan, Si Sa
Ket Province (15° 22' 44” N, 104° 10' 59” E) in March; and a Monkey Buffet
at Khao Wang, Petchaburi Province in January. The feeding party for monkeys
at Lopburi has become an internationally renowned event. The main group of
monkeys attending the party lives at the Prang Sam Yot shrine ( Figure 5.2 ).
Local people believe that Lopburi's monkeys are the descendants of Hanuman,
the monkey-hero of the mythical Hindu figure Rama, and respect and toler-
ate them. In addition to the positive attitude to the monkeys, there also were
