mountain with mining for limestone occurring on one side of it. During
observations made in May 2003, long-tailed macaques were seen avoiding
and always keeping a distance from stump-tailed macaques (Malaivijitnond
and Hamada, 2005 ). However, observations made in February 2007 at the
same site, revealed the two species of macaques came closer to each other
and were seen grooming and playing (Malaivijitnond and Hamada, 2008 )
( Figure 5.8 ).
At Wat Tham Kham, Sakhon Nakhon Province (17° 13' 07.2” N, 103° 54'
02.2” E), a group of pig-tailed macaques with 86 individuals were counted
in October 2004. Their relative tail lengths varied (35-75 percent) and were
rather higher than that reported by Fooden ( 1975 ). Three female long-tailed
macaques and one juvenile male with hybrid morphological characters between
the two species (crest at the crown and pelage color of long-tailed macaques,
but with a slender, thinly covered in fur and short tail of pig-tailed macaques)
were observed. However, when we first visited the site in January 2002, only
four long-tailed macaques were found at the time.
