erate malocclusion and DI.
FIGURE 33.11 Lateral cephalometric radiograph and tracing of a
patient with type I OI showing moderately abnormal findings in the
anteroposterior plane. Vertical plane measurements are within normal
limits. The tendency towards a Class III skeletal malocclusion is present
with compensation of the incisor angulations to have a positive ante-
rior overjet.
Occlusal Plane Alterations
Proper occlusal development and dental interdigita-
tion are dependent on normal growth and development
of the craniofacial complex and of the dentoalveolar
bones that house the dentition. 57,58 OI, by altering the
normal bone modeling and remodeling via poor osteo-
clastic-osteoblastic activity, has a profound impact on
This anteroposterior discrepancy may be attributed
to several possibly interrelated factors. Lack of sagittal
and/or vertical development of the nasomaxillary com-
plex, mandibular sagittal overdevelopment compared
to the nasomaxillary complex and clockwise rotation of
the mandible into an over-closed position projecting the
chin forward ( Figure 33.13 ).
