In Depth Tutorials and Information
hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia - may all be
treated with glasses or contact lenses. As many OI
eyes have scleral thinning, reduced ocular rigidity and
potentially increased risk for scleral rupture associated
with trauma, it is recommended that OI patients wear
glasses with strong frames and shatter-resistant lenses
to protect against accidental eye trauma. Importantly,
routine examinations by ophthalmologists are encour-
aged to detect potentially sight-threatening conditions,
such as glaucoma and retinal detachment. The OI reg-
istry suggests that eye conditions are common in the OI
population. OI patients should tell their ophthalmolo-
gists that they have OI to prompt careful evaluations
for eye pathologies associated with OI. In general, OI
patients should have eye examinations annually or at
any time new visual symptoms arise.
